Summer Reading Program

Details

– Daily –

  • Lunch at the Library: 12-1pm

The school district provides lunch pick-ups for students and families throughout summer recess. Families will be invited to enjoy their lunches in the library. Various passive activities such as coloring sheets, word searches, and cut and glue crafts will be available each day. Families may check out books.

– Weekly –

  • Family Storytime & Craft: Tuesdays, 11am-12pm

An all ages storytime with a simple craft.

  • Build It!: Tuesdays, 1-3 pm

A variety of puzzles, LEGOS, and building blocks will be available for use in the library.

Students and families are invited to create comics and doodles. There will be a guided doodle and free draw options. Blank comic panels will be provided. Drawing paper and implements provided.

Students are invited to bring their school-issued Chromebook and join our server to play and build together.

Students will discuss assigned readings at each meeting.

  • Weekly Book Displays:

    • Color-themed display: Books with the same color covers will be featured

    • Art-themed display: Books with certain types of illustrations will be displayed together with non-fiction books about these art techniques and types

    • Entertainment-themed display: Selections will relate to the major entertainment and activities scheduled for the week

 

– Entertainment, Art & Activities –

  • Kick-Off Event: Monday, July 6

Students and their families are invited to spend the afternoon to Kick-Off the Summer Reading Program.

 

Families may enjoy lunch in the library and then head out to the fields for bounce houses and waterslides or to play on the playground. Sidewalk chalk and bubbles will also be available. Popsicles will be served.

 

Each student will receive a drawstring backpack which will contain a calendar of program events, a Summer Reading Challenge Activity Tracker sheet, a bookmark, and a pencil. Students will select their choice of a free book.

 

Opportunities:

  • All Grades: Reserve t-shirt for Tie Dye Activity on July 29th

  • Grades 3-5: Sign up for Book Club – Art Club, by Rashad Doucet.
    Participants will receive a copy of the book to keep.

Local magician, Brady Lee, will perform “The Magic of Reading” in two sessions.

  • Geometric Art: Wednesday, July 15

Students and families are invited to create geometric art using shape stencils and watercolor paints. Students will trace over-lapping shapes onto their watercolor paper using pencils and then fill in the spaces with color. Finally, the students will trace the pencil lines with black markers

Joe Gandelman performs an interactive show about the joy of reading in two sessions.

– ​Marketing & Promotion –

Flyers promoting the Summer Reading Program will begin going home with students in May. Flyers will be posted to all common areas, bathrooms, classrooms, in the cafeteria, and main office. Flyers will also be posted on school social media and communications platforms. Teachers will communicate about the opportunity to their students’ families via ClassDoJo.

In June, the librarian will host two virtual information sessions to introduce the Summer Reading Program to families.

– ​Staffing & Support – 

​This program will be supported by the Teachers of Tomorrow Club from the local high school. These are high school students interested in entering the teaching profession. The Teachers of Tomorrow members and mentors will serve as volunteer staff for the Summer Reading Program.

 Details

  • Each student will receive a Summer Reading Challenge Activity Tracker

  • Students will mark off boxes as they complete activities and attend programs

  • Each box earns a ticket to use at the Library Summer Store

  • The Library Summer Store features small prizes and candy, mini building sets, plush toys, fidget toys, coupons for free food items at local restaurants, books, and a chance to win an e-reader (one winner per grade-level)
