Let's Go Camping!

Family Literacy Night

Cafeteria

This is an evening family engagement event designed to encourage families to read and write together. The event will be held in the cafeteria. Each attendee will be served a hotdog, a bag of chips, and a drink. After dinner, families will rotate through activity stations set up inside and outside of the cafeteria. Participants will each receive a Take & Make S'mores kit as a parting gift. 

Agenda:

6-6:30 pm Dinner

6:30-8 pm Literacy Activities

Activity Stations:

  • Campfire Songs and Stories - Guest readers will read stories and lead campfire songs outside on the basketball court. An artificial campfire will be set up with benches arranged in a circle around it. families can come and go as they please. Stories will be ongoing throughout the evening.

  • Fishing for Rhymes - Participants will fish for rhyming words using a wooden dowel with a long string and magnet attached. In a small wading pool, there will be fish with various words printed on them and a paperclip attached. Participants will try to "catch" pairs of fish that rhyme.

  • Build a Shelter - Using toothpicks and mini marshmallows, participants will build camping shelters.

  • Photo Booth - A camping-themed backdrop and props will be available for families to take photos.

  • Knot Tying - Volunteers from the local Boy Scouts will teach families how to tie various knots with rope.

  • Scavenger Hunt - Families will be provided a clipboard, pencil, and scavenger hunt list to search for camping-themed words in the cafeteria.

​Marketing & Promotion:

Teachers will communicate about the Literacy Night Event to their students’ families via ClassDoJo. Flyers will be sent home with students in the week leading up to the event and posted to all common areas, bathrooms, classrooms, in the cafeteria, and main office. Staffing & Support:

Teachers will volunteer to lead activity stations. PTA volunteers will serve dinner and help with se-up and clean-up. Local Boy Scout members will assist with knot tying station.

Let's God Camping Family Literacy Night Flyer

Special Guests: Local Public Librarians.

 

The librarians will discuss programming and services available at the public library. Children's services librarian will promote children's programming during upcoming school breaks. Adult services librarian will discuss opportunities and resources for adults. There will be 10-15 minutes of Q&A time. The meeting will be hosted on Zoom.

Marketing & Promotion:

The Librarian will speak to families about this opportunity during the Let's Go Camping Family Literacy Night.
